What are the Responsibilities of the Part-Time Faculty Outreach Coordinator?
  • Along with the Part-Time Member of the AUFA Executive, will serve as co-chair of the Part-Time Members Engagement Committee;
  • Support AUFA activities for Fair Employment Week (October 16-20);
  • Create content focused on part-time members for the AUFA newsletter, The Communicator;
  • Proactively engage with part-time members;
    • Composing regular email FAQs to part-time membership (e.g., sharing information available on Acadia part-time member webpage; describing the role of the part-time liaison “what can this role do for you!?”; Fair Employment Week; how to read your pay advice; how to know if you’re in the pension plan and how to receive statements);
  • Act as a point of contact for part-time members seeking support and advice regarding employment issues. This will include weekly office hours, which can be held virtually or in-person;
  • Coordinate updates to the Part-Time Faculty page of the AUFA website;
  • Submitting an end-of-term report to the AUFA Executive detailing accomplished activities and recommendations (if applicable).
How is the Part-Time Faculty Coordinator Selected?
  • Annually between August 15- September 10, a call to serve as the Part-Time Faculty Outreach Coordinator will be circulated on the AUFA listserv. The call should be circulated at least twice before the due date. Interested part-time AUFA members will submit their application to the Union Officer and the member will be selected by the AUFA Executive.
  • The AUFA Executive will evaluate applicants based on their response to why they would like to serve as the Part-Time Faculty Outreach Coordinator and what they hope to achieve in the role. A familiarity with the Collective Agreement will be considered an asset. In order to promote member engagement, each year priority will be given to applicants who have not already served in the position.
Term Length, Honorarium, Qualifications
  • Fall and Winter semesters (September 15 – April 30)
  • Must hold the status of Teaching Affiliate (Article 11.21 of the Collective Agreement) at the time of application
  • Expected service commitment: approximately 7 hours per week, following a principle of flexibility in how this is time is distributed
  • Honorarium: Equivalent to 3 CH course stipend (as of July 1 of the year the position is held)
  • How is the Honorarium calculated? The Honorarium is not intended to be an hourly wage, but is a recognition of the service provided by the position holder. Because part-time members are not compensated by the employer for their service work at Acadia, AUFA recognizes the importance of compensating part-time members for substantial service work, like the role of the Part-Time Faculty Outreach Coordinator. Taking into consideration the approximate number of hours of service intended for this position, the honorarium shall not amount to less than a living wage rate. According the CCPANS, in 2023 this is $25.40 for the Annapolis Valley. Article 11.17 (d) of the CA is also instructive for calculating the compensation rate for Part-Time Members. Article 11.17 (d) states that “for purposes of calculating hours of work for Employment Insurance, each three (3) credit hours taught by Employees, including during Intersession, shall constitute 200 hours of employment.” As of July 1, 2023, a 3 CH Basic Stipend is $6,914. When divided by 200, this is equivalent to $34.57 per hour. This position is designed to run 29 weeks with a service commitment of approximately 7 hours per week (= 200 hours). An honorarium of $6,914 is the equivalent of $34.57 per hour for 200 hours of service.
Position Backgroud

In October 2023, AUFA members voted in favour of creating the position of the Part-Time Faculty Outreach Coordinator.  It was created in recognition of the importance of supporting part-time faculty members.

For three years prior to the creation of this permanent position, the AUFA Executive supported a Part-Time Faculty Liaison position on a trial basis.
